From 1 January 2025, the Home Office announced it is replacing physical immigration documents, such as Biometric Residence Permits (''BRPs''), Biometric Residence Cards ("BRCs") and vignette visa stickers, with eVisas. All those with immigration permission that hold a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) or Biometric Residence Card must register for an eVisa as proof of their digital immigration status. The Home Office previously encouraged applications when invited to apply however on 6 August 2024 they updated their guidance to state “anyone with a BRP can create a UKVI account to access an eVisa”

What is an eVisa?

This is an online record of immigration status attached to a valid travel document that confirms conditions of permission to enter or stay in the UK. An eVisa can be obtained by creating a UKVI account and registering a current valid travel document used when travelling to and from the UK.

Who needs an eVisa?

Anyone with immigration status who have a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) or Biometric Residence Card. For anyone with no physical proof of their visa they cannot access an eVisa so if they have a visa vignette, wet ink visa stamp or form for affixing a visa to a passport, the Home Office guidance recommends they make a 'no time limit (NTL)' application to obtain a BRP and then use this to register for a UKVI account. For persons with status under the EU Settlement Scheme they will already have an eVisa but for those with Biometric Residence Cards yet to apply they are encouraged to make an application. For anyone who has lost your BRP, they can still create an account using their passport or visa application number. At present those with a Right of Abode are not covered in the guidance and those with no settlement evidence are reminded to make a Windrush application.

What next?

During 2024 and up to 31 December 2024, those with valid BRPs continue to carry their BRP and passport when travelling. Further information about the new eVisa is provided at the government website. In addition the Home Office has usefully released a video on How to Travel With Your eVisa that recommends applicants check their details are correct and up to date on their UKVI account, before they travel to avoid delays or issues when returning to the UK border from January 2025. This is because it is the current passport details that is linked to an eVisa. It is also imperative that dual nationals and those who hold multiple nationalities, register all passports via their account and ensure their passport used for travel is the one linked to their eVisa.
