  • Webinar | Wednesday 25 September 2024 | 12:00 - 13:00 | 1 Hour

Following the General Election on 4 July, we take a look (83 days after the Election) at what’s changed so far and what that means for employment and HR managers working in the higher education sector.

We will also discuss the Worker Protection (Amendment of Equality Act 2010) Act 2023, which is due to come into force in October 2024, and the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act 2023, which received Royal Assent on 11 May 2023.

    Key issues being covered:

    • The first 100 days of a new government and the impact on employment law for HE – what’s being promised, what’s been delivered, what is the likely impact
    • Academic Freedom of Speech - how universities manage the careful balance between free and open debate on complex and sensitive subjects, versus managing the institution’s own reputation
    • Prevention of sexual harassment – what the new duties mean for higher education, what is classed as ‘reasonable steps’, what practical steps can HR managers take?
    • Q&A

Our panel will be chaired by Kelly Simpson. Kelly is a knowledge lawyer in the Bevan Brittan Higher Education team specialising in employment law. She previously worked as a senior in-house lawyer at a Russell Group University, advising senior HR professionals and management on a wide range of employment and strategic issues.

Kelly will be joined by employment lawyers Anne Palmer (Legal Director) and Naomi Compton (Associate).
