Specialist resource management lawyers at Bevan Brittan have advised the East Sussex Joint Waste Partnership on a multimillion pound contract extension.
The partnership, which consists of Hastings Borough, Rother District and Wealden District councils, has agreed a seven-year extension and variation with Biffa related to services including waste collection, street and beach cleansing.
The £119 million contract also boosts the environmental credentials of their relationship, with Biffa introducing a new fleet of waste collection vehicles which operate on hydrotreated vegetable oil. The pair will work together to implement the government’s Simpler Recycling initiatives too, including the introduction of weekly household food waste collections from March 2026.
Bevan Brittan’s Energy & Resource Management team supported the East Sussex Joint Waste Partnership on the new agreement. The specialists have been advising on this area for more than 25 years and have supported 10 environmental services and resource management projects in the past year alone.
Sarah Innes, Legal Director and infrastructure specialist at Bevan Brittan, worked on the contract alongside Solicitor Priscilla Allen.
Sarah said: “We are delighted to have supported these councils with this major contract extension and variation. The multimillion pound agreement will have a major impact on the East Sussex region and also ensure that services are delivered in a greener way, in line with the various policies and targets that have been adopted in this space.
“It’s exciting to see local authorities embracing sustainable solutions and we are sure that this latest agreement will be a fantastic platform for the councils and Biffa to continue their already-fruitful partnership.”
Bevan Brittan has advised on numerous major resource management projects in recent years, including the £500 million Birmingham City Council Waste PPP and the £2.1 billion Tees Valley Waste PPP.
The leading commercial law firm has also continued to invest in and develop its Energy & Resource Management team across the past 12 months, with senior hires including new Partner Gemma Glasspole and Legal Director Tim Kittow.
